　　It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest
　　when you are richest. The fault-finder will
　　find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is.
( q) g0 n3 E' x2 x　　You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling,
- j% w; j/ X. G: b& G9 P3 e$ J　　glorious hours, even in a poor house. The setting sun
5 ~- R4 }, R" L+ ^　　is reflected from the windows of the almshouse
) v( q# o% v" D2 h% o　　as brightly as from the rich man’s abode;
/ m$ _) n. |% k$ J' Q　　the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.
　　I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there,
　　and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.
: s% M  E) h; W9 U2 r% L$ t　　The town’s poor seem to me often to live
8 Y/ {0 U4 U& P6 Z2 {& e# R　　the most independent lives of any. Maybe they are simply
! E8 G% e8 Q0 q4 j  u" H　　great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that
3 N( |2 Z: w8 U6 x' `; n　　they are above being supported by the town;
　　but it often happens that they are not above
% t1 I. a- b: I　　supporting themselves by dishonest means,
　　which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty
　　like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much
　　to get new things, whether clothes or friends.
. q9 X$ y) I; u" D( C3 r　　Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change.
